To specify the method for data recovery from an SSD drive, we must first clarify its fault.
This is done through the diagnosis process, which at Northwind Data Recovery labs is FREE.
For simplicity, we categorize potential faults into the following two categories:
- Electronic Fault in the drive’s PCB, and
- Firmware Fault in the drive.
In case of an electronic fault in the drive’s PCB, we simply need to repair the board and restore the drive’s functionality. This naturally requires top-notch electronics knowledge and is not easy at all.
In case of a firmware fault, which is more common, the success of the process depends on the type of Controller the drive uses and the condition of the NAND chips storing the data.
If the controller is known and has already been reverse-engineered, the drive enters safe mode, where the controller cannot communicate with the other parts of the drive.
In this state, we feed the drive with external firmware, and if successful, we start building the blocks necessary for re-establishing communication with the controller.
If the NAND chips are in good condition, we can achieve a very good result that approaches 100%. If the NAND chips are degraded, we apply techniques to extract the maximum possible percentage from the drive.
