The most common ways a system gets infected by Ransomware are:
- Through fraudulent email. The email may contain a malicious file or a link to a malicious page. The sender
usually appears to be a large company or organization to entice the potential victim to click the link or open the file (email spoofing).
If their attempt is successful and the wrong click is made by the user, it is very likely that the entire internal network of the company or organization will be infected. - Through open, unprotected internet ports. Usually, criminals scan the internet using bots, searching for exposed communication ports. These ports are generally – but not exclusively – those that allow remote access to a computer. In this case, the criminal can break in, enter the victim’s system, infect it, and leave. Similarly, they search for exposed network drives, which they can easily infect if they find a way to enter.
- Through targeted attacks. This usually concerns large companies or organizations. The criminals have identified their victim and apply shadowy methods to gain access to the internal network. These methods may include multiple malicious emails, hoping that an untrained or careless employee will make a fatal mistake.
Methods such as massive brute force attacks on subsystems and even Social Engineering are also employed!
